1. First off, tell me a little something about yourselves. Who are you? Where are you from etc.?
My name's Jonjo, I'm a rapper/songwriter from Gorleston in Norfolk and I'm in a duo with singer-songwriter Rosie, from Kent. We met a couple of years ago in college and after forming a relationship I discovered Rosie could sing really well. At this point I'd been rapping for a few years and had been looking for a female vocalist for a while, it all fell into place nicely. 4 years later we're still a couple and still making music together under the name Destination Mars!
2. What kind of Music do you play?
It's hard to pin point because we're so dynamic in our approach to music, we don't like to set genre boundaries, we have a let the banks overflow so an ocean forms kinda mentality. But to summarize it, I'd say Eclectic music with a Pop + Rap foundation.
3. Do you have a coherent message or any recurring themes that you try to convey through your music?
I'd say a lot of our music is happy and upbeat, if you had to deduce a message we're trying to get across it'd be: no matter what life throws at you, you must remember to keep positive and follow your dreams. They're clichés, but we think they're clichés for a good reason, haha.
4. Why should people listen to your music?
It's a piece of our individual souls that we're sharing with the World, it may resonate with you in a good way, or it might not be on your frequency, but you wont know until you try it.. kinda like sushi.
5. Do you gig often? If so, what kind of response do you get?
We've probably gigged over 50 times and in all honesty we've been very lucky with our responses. Because of how different our style of music is, we find ourselves playing at a lot of places/events that you wouldn't necessarily associate with Rap and Pop, but more often than not we receive great feedback from people surprised to hear something so different. So that's a blessing, one that we try not to overlook or take for granted.
6. Do you have any upcoming projects that fans can look out for?
As a matter of fact we do! We're very busy working on a new Mixtape (I'm about to give you two exclusives here) with the working title: Songs for Human Consumption and at the same time, we're creating a Concept EP charting the story from our Mars origins and how we came to be on Earth, with the Working Title: Origins. Our Mixtape, Songs for Human Consumption is very catchy and maintains our upbeat vibe, but this time around we're coming at it from more of a dance angle. The 5-6 song EP, Origins, however, is going to be more experimental in its approach. On top of this, we've been working on connecting with artists from around the World and forming song collaborations with them. So it's a very busy time for us Studio wise, but we can handle it, we're Martians.
7. Who are you major influences, both within music and without?
Personally, I soak up influence from tons of musicians, regardless of Genre. But my major Rap influences are artists like Eminem, Biggie and Kanye West to name a few. When it comes to the misunderstood technical side of rap, I'm influenced heavily by American Underground Rap artists, like Tech Nine and Apathy. And when it comes to musicality, bands like Cold Play and Flipsyde play a big role. Outside of Music I'd say life influences us more than anything else. Rosie's Major influences vary, she grew up listening to artists from many different genres such as Shania Twain, a country western Singer and Aretha Franklin, an amazing soul singer, but she also appreciates the talents of other artists such as Emeli Sande, Beyonce, Florence and the machine and many more.
8. Are you gamers, if so what do you play?
I must admit, I do like games but I haven't played in ages..I enjoy the Mass Effect Series, GTA, and my guilty pleasure back in the day was Sims! Rosie isn't an avid gamer, but she enjoys Mario Cart on the Wii, and Candy Crush Saga on Facebook! LOL!
9. Do you have any other hobbies?
One of my main loves is not just song writing, but writing in general. Ermm.. another's Philosophy, kind of a lazy one. I'm a bit of a geek in a part sense of the word, I spend a lot of time on the internet and when I'm not recording or listening to music I spend a lot of time up at 3 in the morning drinking Cider talking about the Origins of the Universe and theories like Eternal Return.. I guess you'd label it Drunk Science. But on a macho note, I love Kickboxing and used to teach it, although I don't pursue it as much as I should, anymore. Something Me and Rosie both enjoy doing is cooking, Rosie Enjoys Long Walks (lol sounds like a date ad), reading, listening to music, socializing, arts and crafts and baking.
10. Have you ever had anything particularly embarrassing happen to you, either as a band or as individuals?
Yes! Loads! Just today for example, I was in my bedroom naked after a shower with my window open which you can't see into from any angle, unless you're physically on the roof of my neighbors house, guess what? There were builders on the roof of my neighbors house, surprise to say, I didn't get a whistle. As for Rosie, when she was younger she was on the bus with her head phones blaring and she didn't realize she was singing out loud one of her favorite songs. When the bus approached her stop, she got up, took her head phones off and everyone gave a massive round of applause! Hah, that's a bit cooler than my one to be fair.
11. If money was no object, what would be the first thing you would choose to do?
We'd have a cup of tea then travel the World! (Expensive tea) but to be fair the 80 tea bags for 39p in Morrisons are proper decent.
12. If you could change one thing about Britain as a country, what would it be?
I'd change the system, man. The man's bringing us down, man! Nah, I hate how politicians talk with grandiloquence and then consider people ignorant who don't vote or show an interest in 'Politics', when politics its self is branded and packaged for a certain demographic, the upper class.. so a lot of people avoid it because it isn't down to Earth, it's not that they lack intelligence, the problem is the government needs more diversity, politicians from public schools, politicians that are not just for the people, but are the people. The one thing Rosie would change is to make taxation fairer and allocate government funds more effectively.
