In the summer of 2006, with copious amounts of home-brew running through their veins and their first Apple Mac at their fingertips, Rodeo Terrorists opened Garage Band and begun making music. 7 years later, they are still combining loops, samples and, in their own words, “things that make funny squelchy noises” in eccentric and energetic electro-dance songs.
The most recent of which is lead single Super Massive. Music, for Rodeo Terrorists, is entertainment; it represents fun, diversion and nostalgia and those concepts are certainly present here. Making music that is almost insincere, such as this, is an exploit devoid of emotional attachment; it’s almost decadent. But this is, by no means, a bad thing. In fact, in certain situations, it is precisely what is called for. I can see this song being played at a midnight rave in an abandoned barn in the middle of nowhere, glow sticks flying, UV paint twisting and distorting on the skin of men and women completely lost in the moment and the music.
However, Super Massive is not simply a compilation of quirky noises, thrown together randomly with negligence and nonchalance. At its most traditional, it features melody; at its most structured, it moves seamlessly from one sound to the next; and it has a coherence that can be difficult for artists within the genre to achieve.
Rodeo Terrorists also manage to achieve something that, in my opinion, is both necessary and vital if you are to produce electro-dance music worth listening to. I’m talking about creating a multitude of layers that work together to form one cohesive sound yet still remain relevant when individually isolated. This gives Super Massive a full and textured sound without allowing it become cluttered and claustrophobic.
Rodeo Terrorists have secured air time on a number of radio stations, including support from Tom Robinson and the BBC Introducing team, already and you can expect that to continue, especially with this latest release. Super Massive is out August 12th on ITunes, Amazon and all reputable digital music stores. Download it, play it, lose yourself in it.
