Three Pronged Attack is the debut EP, written recorded and produced by Newark singer-songwriter Will Hoey.
The feature of the piece is, without doubt, Afternoon Delight, a song which has many of the characteristics of popular music, with much mainstream appeal, but simultaneously infuses elements of funk and blues that serve to separate it, musically, from any single genre. Its textured dynamic, with faint vocal harmonies accompanying a myriad of instrumental cameos, provides a depth and complexity beyond the song’s conspicuous elements and its lyricism, which is coy and mischievous, retains enough sincerity to convey earnest wit and joviality.
The second track, Change of Pace, is just that. An instrumental piece built around relatively simple chord progressions, furnished with intricate and flamboyant flourishes, that differs greatly from the opener. It portrays a technical ability within Hoey that is far from lacking and which compliments the fervent song-writing potential displayed in the preceding and proceeding tracks.
Dry Road begins with a fun and funky opening salvo which could be easily mistaken for a retro video game theme, then diverges into engaging vocal melodies and lyrics that, once more, balance sincerity and tradition. A fingerpicked breakdown supplies the background for some wonderfully strong vocal harmonies as the song, and the EP, come to a close.
Three Pronged Attack represents a musical versatility and an eagerness to maintain popular tradition, yet injects vibrant elements of originality throughout. The resultant effect is an EP that possesses wide mainstream appeal yet remains new, fresh and exciting.
