It’s always easy to get behind a hard working band right? A group of guys that love making music as much as you love listening to it? That’s why it’s so easy to get lost in the aura that surrounds ‘Your Cat is a Landmine’. The Lincoln based band came together after previous projects ‘Ewan Hughes’ Army’ and ‘Ride My Fish’ fizzled out and have been writing music together ever since, releasing their debut three track EP entitled ‘A Deceit of Lapwings’ earlier this year. If there’s one thing to like about these guys, it’s the way they manage to delicately balance a hard working attitude, without taking themselves too seriously. And the music’s not bad either.
‘A Deceit of Lapwings’ opens with semi-title track ‘Lapwings’ which features funky bass lines beneath plentiful layers of delayed guitar effects that mirror the vocals, in so much as they paradoxically harsh and penetrative, yet gentle and caressing.
This juxtaposition continues throughout the second track ‘Scatter’. The refrain’s hook line, “Arms raised, reaching fingers. Arms raised, there’s nothing there now”, could almost sing you to sleep, if it were not for the soaring chorus that follows.
‘Wildcard’ brings the EP softly to a close with a beautifully constructed series of melodies, picked on an acoustic guitar and accompanied by more of those mysterious vocals, gruff on the low notes and spacious on the high.
‘A Deceit of Lapwings’ is a praiseworthy first effort from ‘Your Cat is a Landmine’ and I highly recommend that you give it a listen. To really appreciate this band, though, you must see them live. Do so and you might be lucky enough to hear, comfortably, the raddest cover of ‘Pure Shores’ by ‘All Saints’ that has ever been performed. If that’s not incentive enough, then I don’t know what is.
Your Cat is a Landmine is:
- Ben Irving (Vocals, Bass)
- Mike Squirrell (Guitar)
- Alex Vaughan (Drums)
